Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Adjunct in the treatment of acute pulmonary edema. Conditions requiring prompt diuresis, where oral therapy is precluded.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Edema Adult Initial dose: 20-40 mg IM/slow IV given as a single dose. May be increased by 20 mg at 2-hrly intervals. Pulmonary edema 40 mg by IV inj (1-2 min) if needed. Childn 1 mg/kg IM/IV. Dose may be increased up to 6 mg/kg after 2 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. Anuria.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea, pancreatitis, jaundice, anorexia, oral & gastric irritations, vomiting, cramping, constipation; interstitial allergic nephritis; tinnitus & hearing impairment, paresthesias, vertigo, dizziness, headache; thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, anemia; exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, purpura, photosensitization, urticaria, rash, pruritus; orthostatic hypotension; hyperglycemia, glycosuria, hyperuricemia.
